Understanding the pattern can change the problem.
Adults with ADHD, autism, or neurodivergent traits often spend years interpreting recurring difficulties as laziness, inconsistency, oversensitivity, poor discipline, or personal failure. A more accurate understanding of attention, executive functioning, sensory demands, social effort, and nervous-system regulation can change how those experiences are approached.
Greenwood Counseling offers neurodiversity-affirming psychotherapy focused on functioning, self-understanding, emotional health, relationships, and the practical challenges that may accompany ADHD, autism, or related traits.
Executive functioning and overwhelm
Starting tasks, shifting attention, organizing multiple demands, estimating time, maintaining routines, and recovering from disruption can become major sources of stress. When these difficulties repeatedly produce missed expectations or criticism, they can also contribute to anxiety, depression, avoidance, and harsh self-judgment.
Therapy can help distinguish between a skill problem, an environmental mismatch, emotional avoidance, unrealistic expectations, and a pattern that needs a different structure rather than more self-criticism.
Masking, sensory needs, and late identification
Some adults have spent years learning how to appear comfortable, organized, socially fluent, or emotionally regulated while using enormous internal effort to maintain that appearance. Masking can be adaptive, but sustained effort can also contribute to exhaustion, identity confusion, shutdown, or the sense that other people know a version of you rather than you.
Late identification can bring relief and context while also raising questions about the past. Therapy can provide a place to examine those questions without turning every personality trait or life difficulty into a diagnosis.
Relationships and communication
Differences in communication, attention, sensory tolerance, emotional processing, routine, and expectations can affect friendships, marriages, family relationships, and work. Therapy may focus on communication patterns, boundaries, self-advocacy, repair after misunderstandings, and identifying what each person actually needs rather than relying on assumptions.
Psychotherapy, not a promise of diagnostic testing
This service page describes psychotherapy and counseling. Treatment can explore existing diagnoses, suspected neurodivergence, or related concerns, but the purpose of therapy is to address functioning, distress, relationships, identity, and meaningful goals rather than to promise a formal diagnostic evaluation.
