You should not have to spend therapy educating the therapist about your existence.
Greenwood Counseling provides LGBTQ+ affirming psychotherapy for adults and aims to approach sexual orientation, gender identity, relationships, and family context without unnecessary assumptions. Sometimes identity itself is central to the work. Sometimes it is simply one part of a larger life.
Clients may come to therapy for anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relationship problems, neurodivergence, work stress, family conflict, or major life transitions and want to know that those concerns can be discussed without their identity being pathologized or ignored.
Minority stress and the cost of constant calculation
Discrimination, rejection, concealment, vigilance, family conflict, workplace concerns, or repeated decisions about when it is safe to be open can create stress that is not reducible to an individual thinking error. Therapy can help distinguish between internal patterns that may be useful to change and external realities that deserve to be recognized accurately.
Identity, relationships, and belonging
Questions about identity can involve belonging, authenticity, family expectations, sexuality, gender, spirituality, community, or the way different parts of a person’s life fit together. Relationship work may involve communication, trust, attachment, boundaries, dating, long-term partnership, or negotiating different levels of openness in different settings.
An affirming approach can still be clinically direct.
Respect does not require avoiding difficult conversations. Therapy can challenge self-defeating beliefs, examine unhealthy relationship patterns, address avoidance, and work directly with anxiety, depression, trauma, or anger while still respecting identity and context.
Jacob Brown, LPC uses an integrative approach informed by cognitive-behavioral, acceptance-based, psychodynamic, motivational, solution-focused, trauma-informed, and structured problem-solving traditions.
