Relationship & couples counseling

Relationship problems are rarely only about the last argument. Therapy can help identify the pattern underneath repeated conflict, distance, mistrust, or misunderstanding and make communication more specific than simply trying harder to get along.

Recurring conflict usually has a structure.

One person pursues while another withdraws. A practical disagreement becomes a referendum on whether someone cares. Old injuries are brought into new arguments. Each person reacts to the other person’s reaction until the original issue disappears. These cycles can become familiar enough that both people know how the argument will end and still cannot interrupt it.

Relationship counseling can help slow the cycle down, identify what each person is protecting or asking for, and separate the current problem from accumulated assumptions.

Communication is more than choosing better words.

Communication problems often involve timing, defensiveness, expectations, emotional regulation, trust, power, boundaries, and the conclusions people make about each other’s intent. Better communication requires more than a script if the underlying interpretation remains unchanged.

Therapy may work on direct requests, listening, repair after conflict, boundaries, emotional expression, and the difference between solving a problem and trying to win an argument.

Individual therapy can also be relationship therapy.

Not every relationship concern requires both people in the room. Individual therapy can examine attachment patterns, trust, fear of abandonment, avoidance, jealousy, boundaries, communication, dating patterns, family relationships, separation, or the way earlier experiences shape current expectations.

Limited couples counseling

Greenwood Counseling offers couples counseling on a limited basis. Fit, availability, goals, safety, and the nature of the presenting problem matter when deciding whether couples work is appropriate. The purpose is not to assign a winner and a loser, but to understand the relationship pattern and determine what meaningful change would require from both people.
